VTEM Plus: Seeing Beneath the Ground at the Empire District Project

Mineral exploration has a fundamental problem: the most important geology is hidden. At Athos Metals’s Empire District Project in northwestern Ontario, glacial till — sediment deposited by ancient ice sheets — blankets the landscape, concealing the rock formations below. Surface sampling can only tell geologists so much. To see what lies beneath, Athos has turned to geophysics.

What is Geophysics?

Geophysics is the science of measuring the physical properties of the Earth without digging. Just as a doctor can image bones with an X-ray without surgery, geophysicists can detect buried geology by measuring how the Earth responds to energy signals sent into it.

The key insight is straightforward: different rock types conduct electricity differently. Sulphide minerals — the type that host metals like copper, nickel, and platinum — are excellent electrical conductors. This contrast is exactly what electromagnetic geophysics is designed to detect.

How Does VTEM™ Plus Work?

VTEM™ Plus (Versatile Time-Domain Electromagnetic), developed by Geotech Ltd. of Aurora, Ontario, is a helicopter-borne system towed at low altitude across the survey area.  It works in three steps:

  1. Transmit — A large loop of wire suspended beneath the helicopter fires a powerful electromagnetic pulse into the ground.
  1. Induce — When the pulse encounters conductive sulphide minerals, it induces electrical currents in the rock. As those currents decay, they emit their own electromagnetic signal back toward the surface.
  1. Record — Onboard sensors capture the returning signal. Its timing and strength reveal how deep a conductor sits, how large it is, and how strongly it conducts — a direct proxy for sulphide content.

Modern systems like VTEM™ Plus can detect conductors at depths exceeding 500 metres. At Empire, Geotech will fly 1,654 line-kilometres at 100-metre spacing, producing an essentially continuous subsurface map across the Empire, Mack, and Rambler claim blocks that comprise the broader Empire District Project.
